University of Reading, Halls and Catering Redevelopment, Phases 1 and 2
5th November 2010
We are the Building Regulations Approved Inspector for the University of Reading’s £100 million development designed by architects Stride Treglown Limited.
PROJECT DETAILS
From the project inception we have been part of the design and construction team creating 1,859 bedrooms for students, built in four to six storey blocks, including separate buildings for catering, social and laundry facilities.
The University was very keen on undertaking a feasibility study and minimising design risks. Early consultation and decision making by RBC Ltd has assisted with that goal.
“RBC Limited has provided an invaluable contribution to this project and has assisted the University with wider legislative issues speedily and helpfully.”
Dorothy Hague, Head of Strategic Project Development, Facilities Management Directorate, University of Reading
KEY ISSUE
The University wanted to provide access to all parts of the new facility for ambulant disabled and wheelchair users in consultation with staff from Residential & Catering Services, its own Access and Inclusion Officer and the local Planning Access Officer.
OUR SOLUTION
RBC Ltd worked closely with the project team, the University’s Access and Inclusion Officer, the local Planning Access Officer and other stakeholders to negotiate the best outcome regarding facilities for the disabled. Through our expertise in access design, we were able to coordinate the requirements of the University, local authority and government in order to support an approach that suited all.
Historic intake data indicated a reduction in the number of wheelchair disabled bedrooms in relation to the normal figure sought under Approved Document Part M (Access to and use of buildings). We assisted, supported and approved the consideration of data documentation together with an Access Statement that justified a reduced number of enhanced accessible and adaptable bedroom facilities.
