Derbyshire County Council’s Building Schools for Future (BSF) programme
1st December 2010
RBC's role is to approve the design under the Building Regulations and we are an integral part of the design and build team. We provided essential advice and approval for building control as part of the team during the initial bid, design and construction periods.
PROJECT DETAILS
The programme is to create three state-of-the-art education facilities valued at £40m for pupils and wider communities within Derbyshire.
The new schools are:
Heritage Mathematics and Computing Specialist School
Springwell Community School and Specialist Arts College
The Bolsover School and Specialist School in Business Enterprise
The three schools are being built as part of Derbyshire County Council’s BSF programme, which is the biggest single government investment in improving school buildings for over 50 years.
“Each of the designs for the proposed schools presented different challenges. RBC’s involvement in expediently resolving these challenges throughout the procurement process has been appreciated. Working proactively, RBC have helped to develop the detailed designs to create exciting learning environments, which will serve their respectively communities for many years to come.”
Graham Lee, Design and Environmental Manager for Bowmer and Kirkland
KEY ISSUE
The adoption of classrooms opening into internal courtyards for all three projects raised a number of issues regarding the fire safety strategy for each school building.
OUR SOLUTION
We were involved from very early on at the bid stage and highlighted potential issues relating to the design of flexible teaching spaces whilst providing cost effective solutions.
For each school we adopted an agreed fire strategy for the design that facilitated more flexibility to the school learning spaces. The fire strategy for a typical school internal courtyard building to be used as teaching spaces, comprised of an L1 aspiration fire detection system, a property protection sprinkler system throughout the building, together with a managed fire risk assessment based approach inline with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.
