Surrey County Council, Education Framework Agreement
1st December 2010
The refurbishment and extension of St Mary’s Primary School under the former Surrey County Council Education Framework Agreement.
PROJECT DETAILS
We provided Building Control expertise as part of the project team, contracted to unite two sites used by St Mary’s Primary School, which required the refurbishment and extension of original school buildings.
Carried out over two phases, the project involved a major extension to create an additional six classrooms, an extension to the main hall, the creation of new offices, two new meeting rooms, new corridors to enable better circulation within the school and additional internal refurbishment of existing classrooms.
The design was developed by architects Hunter & Partners with the main contractor Willmott Dixon Construction.
KEY ISSUE
The existing school was a large non-fire compartmented building and the additional extensions added to an excessive fire compartment size.
In addition, the extension of a building to greater than 1,000m sq floor area results in the need to consider ‘Consequential Improvements’ to the existing building and look at cost effective ways for upgrading the thermal fabric and heating systems.
OUR SOLUTION
RBC advised and agreed new fire compartment sizes within the new and existing building to limit the otherwise uncontrolled spread of fire.
We also worked closely with the designers, contactors and Surrey County Council to consider ‘Consequential Improvements’ and make realistic enhancements to the existing building that could be completed with minimal disruption to the school.
