Exceeding All Expectations

Historic Buildings

We have a real pride in our historic buildings projects. When it comes to renovating or conserving any historic or listed building there are usually detailed legal issues to address and often demanding guidelines to follow.

We can add value to your team by providing sympathetic problem solving advice on historic buildings while ensuring that all regulations are compliant.

  • Albert Mill, Manchester

We are really pleased with the pragmatic and proactive approach of RBC and their willingness to roll their sleeves up and get involved in the design process and in resolving issues on site in a timely manner.

Case Studies

  • Victoria Palace Theatre

One of RBCs clients for which we provide a full building control service is the Delfont Mackintosh Theatre Group. This includes the following theatres; Prince of Wales, Prince Edward, Queens, Wyndham, Noel Coward, Sondheim and Gielgud. All of these Theatres are interesting, even if the work is to refurbish the toilets. The interest is in visiting back of house non-public areas and standing in the middle of the stage of an empty prestigious London Theatre. One small project was the alterations to the Julie Andrews VIP suite in the Prince Edwards Theatre. The room is surrounded with photographs of Julie Andrews taken throughout her career, the earliest is a black and white photograph of her performing in a pantomime in1955.

  • Ivy House

This building was originally a large private house in NW London overlooking open parkland and parts of it were originally built in the 1750s with later extensions and a modern annex building, probably in the location of the original stables. The building is locally listed and the building control work which RBC is overseeing is to fully refurbish the building and adapt it as a school for about 280 children up to year 6. Part of the work is to remove and replace the first floor structure with new timber joists and to strengthen the existing steelwork.

  • Cannington Court

RBC worked with BDG Architects, MACE and EDF Energy on the restoration and refurbishment of Grade I, 900 year old Priory building in Somerset. Initially, this was home to a Benedictine nunnery and latterly a college. The project has created training and accommodation facilities for EDF and has included detailed restoration of the Priory building.

  • Great Scotland Yard

RBC are appointed as Building Control for the conversion of the former Scotland Yard headquarters building into a luxury hotel. The 235 bedroom hotelwill contain one of the capital's most luxurious VIP suites.

  • The University Arms Hotel

RBC were appointed to provide full Building Control services and took our brief one step further by assisting our client to agree a fire strategy that included removing one of the three existing means of escape; for the prestigious redevelopment and refurbishment of the University Arms Hotel in Cambridge. This £25 million restoration will return this beautiful building to its previous status.

  • Albert Mill, Manchester

RBC was an integral part of the design team on the £2.4 million refurbishment and conversion of the four storey grade II listed Albert Mill building into bespoke apartments and commercial space.
