RBC have been appointed by John Simpson Architects to provide full Building Control services for the prestigious commission to redesign the Royal College of Music in South Kensington. The project is valued at £25 million and will transform the Grade II Listed Building. The project involves basement, sub-basement, lower ground, first and second floor extensions in a former courtyard that links part of the Royal College of Music together and form a new museum, bar, cafes, two new theatres and practice rooms. The effects on the existing fire compartmentation and means of escape needed careful consideration and justification and RBC have worked closely with the Architects, JSA, and the fire engineer to achieve this.
Bowmer and Kirkland worked with RBC on this major redevelopment of an existing secondary school. Works included a three storey extension to the existing main building and a new two storey teaching block to create a modern and flexible teaching environment for over 1300 pupils.
RBC's role is to approve the design under the Building Regulations and we are an integral part of the design and build team. We provided essential advice and approval for building control as part of the team during the initial bid, design and construction periods.
