Key Issue
The specialist requirements of a healthcare building demand a different approach to the provision of means of escape from the guidance given in Approved Document B1.  Important issues surrounding accessibility and sustainability also had to be addressed.

Our Solution
RBC worked collectively with stakeholders using NHS Estates HTM Codes to design a strategy of progressive horizontal evacuation combined with management procedures to facilitate the escape of bedridden occupants or those with restricted mobility.  Our collaborative approach was essential to allow for a flexible solutions that serves the lifetime of the building, from the planning stage right through to everyday management.

A fire engineered solution was incorporated into the open plan design and assessed by RBC as an innovative method of providing an attractive atrium whilst meeting occupant safety.  The building incorporates a variety of measures collectively agreed to ensure accessibility for all patients and visitors including wheelchair users, people with restricted mobility or other disabilities.

RBC was consulted on the levels of thermal insulation used in the construction of the building's fabric and efficient plant, heating and lighting systems to ensure an effective use of fuel and power helping to reduce environmental impact.
