Imam graduated in civil engineering from Aligarh University in India and worked as engineer in that country for a while before coming to the UK. Here he worked a structural engineer with TP Bennett, GKN Reinforcements and the former London County Council before joining Bradford University as Research Assistant in Structural Engineering. He was promoted to Research Fellow and Senior Research Fellow and obtained his PhD.
Imam has since worked both in design and construction of multi-storey buildings, including design for earthquake resistance. Among the organisations he was employed are:
London Borough of Camden as Principal Building Control Officer, London Borough of Hackney as Senior Building Control Officer, University College (now National University of Ireland) Galway as senior Lecturer, A A Tsoumbas Associates, Athens as Principal Project Engineer, Garyounis (now Benghazi) University where, as Professor and Head of Civil Engineering, was responsible for setting up the new department.
Imam is a co-author, with C B Wilby of a book “Concrete Shell Roofs” (Applied Science Publishers in UK and Halsted Press in USA). He has also published several research papers in journals including Proceedings of American Society of Civil Engineering, Journal of Structural division and Journal o Engineering Mechanics Division, International Journal of Mechanical Sciences
