Gielgud and Sondheim Theatre Break-Through
Due to the restrictions on both audience numbers and theatre openings the proposal is to form a break-through between two adjoining theatres. These are the Gielgud and Sondheim (previously the Queen’s) Theatres which are both part of the Delfont Mackintosh Theatre group. The original idea was for an temporary opening to be formed between the two stages of the Theatres, not for public use but in order to keep their social distancing the cast and staff can use the dressing rooms and back of house areas in one Theatre for a performance in the other Theatre. This was intended to be a temporary arrangement during the lock-down periods but because of the cost of the works the Theatre Group management have decided that they want this to be a permanent arrangement, the breakthrough will not now be at stage level but will be at stair connection levels higher up but is still only intended for staff and cast use. RBC have had preliminary discussions on fire separation, because the break-through is through what is effectively a party wall and means of escape.
